About Greensboro

Greensboro, one of North Carolina's largest cities, is centrally located and is an easy drive to the beautiful mountains or coast. Our city boasts a robust economy and is home to more than 205,000 people. With its proximity to raw materials and an excellent interstate highway system, the region has been a center for textile, furniture and tobacco industries for much of the 20th century. In fact, one of the town’s early civic leaders gave Greensboro the name "Gate City" because of its good railroad connections, which are still in use today. As Greensboro enters the millennium, the city is increasingly looking to high-tech and start-up companies to diversify its economic base.

Greensboro's historical roots include one of the Revolutionary War's pivotal battles—the Battle of Guilford Courthouse. Greensboro is also where the "Sit-In" movement began in 1960, fueling the campaign for racial integration in the South.

Today, Greensboro is renowned as an academic center—the city is home to five colleges and universities—and is the envy of the state for its parks and recreation system. Greensboro is also home to three professional sports teams: the Greensboro Bats (Class A minor league affiliate of the New York Yankees), the Generals (NHL), and the Prowlers (arenafootball2). Greensboro joins High Point and Winston-Salem to form the Triad, home to 450,000 people. The Triad is within an hour of Chapel Hill, Durham, and Raleigh.
