Internships

The News & Record offers 12-week, paid summer internships in News-Editorial. Each summer, the News-Editorial department offers one reporting internships, one copy editing internship, one sports writing internship and one photography internship. Applicants are required to submit a portfolio of clips, layouts or photographs indicating strong news judgment, creativity, and ability to perform under deadline pressure. Cover letters, resumes and work samples are due Jan. 1 for the upcoming summer. Interns are notified of their status by early February. In the spring and fall, the news-editorial department will consider students for unpaid, for-credit internships. In special instances, a paid internship in writing, editing or photography might be available. The News & Record Interactive (NRI) Department hosts for credit internship with students who seek practical experience with the online world. NRI has internships available for those whose interests are in the following areas:

  • • Programming / Software Engineering
  • • Database Management
  • • Network Administration with a focus on the Internet
  • • Online Security

Scholarships/Internships

$10,000 and Newsroom Internships! The Landmark Publishing Group offers a minority "Landmark Scholars" program, which provides a $10,000 scholarship, two paid summer internships, and a full-time paid internship for at least one year after graduation. Applicants must be minority college sophomores and first preference is given to students with ties to the Mid-Atlantic states. Scholars will intern in the newsroom at the News & Record in Greensboro, N.C., The Roanoke (Va.) Times, or The Virginian-Pilot in Norfolk between their sophomore and junior years and again at the same paper between their junior and senior years. Scholars will be assigned an editor/mentor and a peer partner each summer. Scholars will be awarded a $5,000 scholarship upon successful completion of each of the two summer internships. At graduation, scholars will be offered a one-year internship with full benefits - and the possibility for continuing employment.
