Newsprint
The
News & Record uses newsprint that is manufactured by Bowater, Inc.
The newsprint comes in giant rolls, most of which weigh a ton (about
2000 pounds). The ton roll is about 8 miles long. The rolls arrive by
train, and are unloaded with special forklifts and stacked 6 rolls high.
Some rolls are 1 page wide, some 2 pages wide, some 3 pages wide and
some 4 pages wide.
To print
a typical weekday newspaper, we use approximately 30 rolls. The Sunday
paper uses about 70 rolls. Our storage capacity allows us to store about
a month’s worth of newsprint.
The newsprint
that we receive from Bowater comes from loblolly or southern yellow
pine that has been planted and harvested specifically to produce paper.
Last year, and every year, there are more trees planted than are cut
down for papermaking.
Every month the News
& Record sends about 125 tons of used newsprint to be recycled.
