Putting
People First
At
the News & Record, we believe that our people are our greatest asset.
Our goal is to create a culture where our people and our business can
grow.
That
means we empower employees to play a role in decision making and problem
solving.
We
also help our people balance their work life and personal life, including
offering seminars ranging from buying your first home to caring for
an elderly relative. We also have a day-care reimbursement program,
as well as a snow-day child care program for elementary children.
Our
employee assistance program offers six free confidential counseling
sessions for all full-time employees.
We
help our employees grow and develop professionally through goal setting,
in-house training and challenging new opportunities. Our tuition reimbursement
program helps full-timers and eligible part-timers continue their college
education or pursue a graduate degree.
And
we have fun, too, with periodic events on site for employees. Read below
about how we are reaching out to employees' families through Take
Your Kids to Work day and Unitown.

Take
Your Kids to Work Day
A
"ton" of kids participated in the News & Record's
first official "Take Your Kids to Work Day" on April
26 at the newspaper's Greensboro office. During a tour of the
facility, the 20 kids stood together on a large scale in the production
department and discovered that they weighed almost 2,000 poundsabout
the size of a large roll of newsprint.
Other activities included a newspaper scavenger hunt and classified
"happy ad" creation. The event was sponsored by our
Work-Life Team.

Unitown
The
News & Record has made a promise to the community and diversity
by investing in its future leaders. In May of 2001, the News &
Record demonstrated that commitment by sponsoring Unitown, a three-day
leadership and human relations program for employees' high school-age
children. Twenty-eight teens participated in the first News &
Record Unitown experience. The News & Record sponsored 14
kids, and co-sponsor Kay Chemical Company also sponsored 14. The
National Conference for Community and Justice coordinated the
program.
|
| Held
at a camp in Blowing Rock, NC, Unitown brought together students
of different backgrounds, ethnicities and economic statuses to learn
the value of leadership and tolerance. Teens gained experience through
activities such as discussion groups and role-plays. They also explored
stereotypes, discrimination, race relations, gender roles and cultural
awareness. |
