Educational Projects

Kids Voting
Since 1996, more than 150,000 students have gone to the polls to vote alongside their parent or other adult on election day for Kids Voting—Guilford County. The News & Record has been the driving force for this nonpartisan, grassroots-driven project which teaches kids about the rights and responsibilities of voting. Over $200,000 has been donated as well as over $250,000 in advertising support.

Scholastic Achievement Awards
This program awards scholarship to five seniors in the News & Record circulation area. Aside from the scholarships that recognize outstanding achievement in academics, citizenship, school activities and community service, the program also recognizes outstanding students in grades 10, 11, and 12 in a special section published each June. Additional money goes to nonprofit organizations selected by the four judges.

Commitment to Excellence
Guilford County Schools, in partnership with the business community and private foundations, initiated Commitment to Excellence as a way to encourage excellence by recognizing and rewarding outstanding achievement by students, teachers, and schools; to address student performance issues through training of teachers and administrators; and to reward candidates who are willing to work in schools highly impacted by poverty. The News and Record has pledged $75,000.

News & Record Technology Center
Located at Greensboro College, this center houses a literacy program to train tutors who work with adults with poor reading skills. Initially the program focused on support for Reading Connections but has now expanded to other community programs. Besides state-of-the-art computers for the lab, funding also provided laptops that can be checked out and used by tutors with their students. This is a collaborative effort of the News & Record, and Greensboro College to address the educational challenges in Guilford County.

Literacy 2000
The News & Record sponsored a year-long literacy initiative in collaboration with the Greensboro Public Library, Reading Connections, GTCC, and Guilford County Schools. A summit in January 2000 brought together community leaders and literacy professionals to lay the foundation for a comprehensive strategic plan.

Greensboro Public Library
No institution caters to the community at large more than the library. The new main branch, in the emerging cultural district downtown, can be a hub for community gathering. The News & Record is a major supporter.

N&R Leadership Endowment at UNCG
This endowment funds a leadership program for selected students at UNCG, with each year of their college career focusing on a different aspect of leadership.
