Human Services Projects

United Way
The News & Record is a strong supporter of United Way. Our contribution goes to area United Ways to help fund human service agencies under the United Way umbrella. This is in addition to money contributed by employees

News & Record Blood Drive
In celebration of the News & Record's centennial in 1990, a blood drive was selected as a way to give back to the community. It was such a success that the newspaper has since held one each June to help the Red Cross replenish depleted blood supplies.

Days of Caring
Each fall, the United Way and the Volunteer Center join hands to sponsor Days of Caring, a week-long corporate volunteer initiative with area businesses "adopting" local agencies and then allowing employees time off from work to volunteer. The News & Record has participated each year, lending a helping hand to such agencies as Hospice, YWCA, Alcohol and Drug Services, and the YMCA.

Serving Greensboro Together
Each year area restaurants set aside one day when 10 percent of that day's receipts are donated to the Greensboro Urban Ministry. The News & Record is the primary sponsor of this event which has grown in scope each year and is supported by thousands of people in the community.

Salvation Army Center of Hope
The News & Record made a pacesetter gift for this facility which will house homeless families, women and men. A key component of the center's mission is the requirement that all residents participate in rehabilitative programs ranging from substance abuse, parenting skills, literacy, job skills, mental health, basic healthcare and consumer counseling.

Junior League of Greensboro
The News & Record is a major donor for the Junior League's 75th Anniversary project that raises money to enrich the lives of all generations of women. The League uses volunteers to leverage this money that will help address emotional, physical, and life-skill well-being of all women. By targeting women, it is hoped that children and families will also be positively impacted.

Partnership Village
A collaborative effort of Habitat for Humanity and Greensboro Urban Ministry, Partnership Village is a development that assists formerly homeless individuals and families transition to permanent, stable housing.

YMCA
The News & Record is a major contributor in a capital campaign to raise funds to build two new facilities — one in downtown Greensboro and one in Guilford College — and to renovate the Herman Weaver Outdoor Center.

Family and Children’s Service
Capital campaign will raise funds to renovate the Mickel Hopkins Building in downtown Greensboro. This will consolidate Clara House women’s shelter, administrative offices and counseling/clinical services. The News & Record is a major funder.
