Transportation
The News
& Record has a fleet of 34 vehicles that are used to deliver the
papers to the carriers each morning. The vehicles are a combination
of vans, trucks, and tractor-trailers. The traditional vehicles for
delivery are the vans and trucks. The tractor-trailers are special newspaper
delivery vehicles that were designed, built and implemented at the News
& Record. They are called Mobile Distribution Centers, or MDC’s,
because the trailers are compartmentalized for each route. The sides
of the trailers have 12 doors per side, and behind each door is a compartment
with just one carrier’s newspapers in it. The tractor (or puller) driver
simply drives up to a drop site, unhooks the trailer, and drives back
to the News & Record to pick up and pull another trailer out. Once
dropped, all of the carriers can access their routes at the same time.
This system saves time for the carriers and the driver.
